I was recently hired to build new hoop skirts for Baz: A Musical Tour de Force at The Palazzo in Las Vegas. The other night I was able to see the show and see my creations in action.
Since I was building new hoop skirts I copied the measurements from the old ones for the heights and widths of the hoops. I used a heavier black vinyl with minimal stretch from Heddy's, cutting 2" strips, folding under both ends 1/2" and topstitching to 1" black webbing. For the waistbands I used a black broadcloth cotton fabric. I absolutely LOVE how these skirts turned out and I can't wait to make more for my own collection!
Now that school is over I have time to get back to blogging and what better way to jump back in than the Met Gala! As someone who often straddles the line between fashion and costume, I LOVE the Met Gala every year! This year's theme "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" brought about many spiritual and religious inspired designs. The following are my picks for Best Dressed of the evening.
Amanda Seyfried was part Juliet and part golden goddess in Prada. There is a ton of fabric in this flowy gown, but it's synched in all the right places for a flattering fit.
Hailey Baldwin traded in her typical sporty style for this ethereal Tommy Hilfiger gown. I love the structured bodice paired with the drapy sleeves, skirt, and train. The American model completed her look with sky high platform stilettos, pastel pink hair, and a crown of roses.
Stephen Colbert joked around with Jimmy Fallon striking Zoolander poses while rocking this gorgeous suit coat by his Late Show wardrobe guy, Antonio Zayas. I'm not usually a fan of men's suits made out of prints, but this one was great, even if Colbert himself joked it looked like Grandpa's couch cushion.
Winnie Harlow looked like an angel in this Tommy Hilfiger ensemble. The dress itself was quite simple in design, but effective. I especially love the ornate headpiece!
Donald Glover had a fantastic weekend - hosting SNL, releasing his new music video "This is America," and he finished it off with this fantastic mauve suit from Gucci at the Met Gala. I love the color of his suit and the unexpected embroidery detail on the back of his suit jacket.
Irina Shayk was golden goddess meets Egyptian Queen with a modern twist in this Versace gown. I adore the ornate detailing in both the bodice and skirt. She accessorized fantastically with boyfriend, Bradley Cooper, too.
Scarlett Johansson caused controversy with the label she wore to the Met Gala. She rocked this beautiful magenta gown by Marchesa, a label co-run by Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife, Georgina Chapman. I, for one, am happy she chose to wear the label, and not just because this dress is lovely front and back (look at how the neckline incorporated her back tattoo). While many want to blast Chapman for her estranged husband's behavior, the Time's Up movement is about supporting all women, and Johannson did that in her own way.
Amal Clooney stood apart from the other looks at the Met Gala. Her navy, satin pants were an unexpected touch in this Richard Quinn ensemble.
Katy Perry has never been one to shy away from making a bold fashion statement and the Met Gala was no exception. I'd say her look was more costume-y than most, but it was great for the occasion. Her natural stage presence kept her from being dwarfed by these bejeweled and feathered wings by Versace.
Zendaya rocked the evening with this custom battle armor gown by Versace. She gave serious Joan of Arc vibes as she walked the carpet. I can only imagine how heavy the ensemble was, but Zendaya handled it like a pro.
While it didn't win my Best Dressed pick, Jourdan Dunn's ethereal gown by Diane Von Furstenberg came in a very close second. This angelic look was spectacular in its simplicity and made the supermodel look like a goddess floating down the carpet.
My favorite look of the night goes to Blake Lively who wore Atelier Versace. There were many stunning looks, but this one's incredible embellishment wins top honor. This gown reportedly took more than 600 hours to create and was so massive Lively took a party bus to the gala! The time and effort was worth it as this gown is beyond spectacular!!
