My apologies for the delay between blog posts. I've been working 60 hour work weeks recently, but thankfully that's over for now.
The 91st (or as Tina Fey joked the millionth) Academy Awards was held recently. Between the red carpet and the Vanity Fair After Party there were so many fantastic looks I had to split the list into two. So first off my picks for best dressed at the show!
Sarah Paulson wore this bright and beautiful Brandon Maxwell gown at the show. While pink was the color for this year's Oscars, this dress is quite unique. It's quite voluminous and could easily overwhelm the wearer, but the cutouts are perfectly sized and placed to show off Ms. Paulson's figure.
I love this lilac Balmain gown worn by Emilia Clark. The structured bodice paired with the drapey skirt out of this slinky metallic material is perfect for this Game of Thrones star. The color, while similar to the pinks worn on the carpet, was different enough to stand out.
Lady Gaga shined as bright as the $30 million Tiffany & Co necklace she wore with this Alexander McQueen gown by Sarah Burton. I love this look from head to toe. It's incredibly elegant with the voluminous skirt and train, but with modern twists perfect for Lady Gaga, like the drop waist and sculptural hips.
My favorite look goes to this Christian Siriano ensemble worn by Billy Porter. This design is so innovative and when I look at it I wonder why did we have to wait til 2019 to see it? The look was versatile, too. While Billy Porter was hosting red carpet interviews for the ABC Network he had a slimmer skirt and a skinny tie, which he changed out for the ballgown skirt and bowtie when he walked the red carpet. While many have worn their take on the men's suit on the red carpet, none have blurred the lines of gender identity quite like this one and Billy Porter was the perfect person to wear it. He is confident, loves fashion and always has fun at these stuffy award shows. And thank you to Glenn Close for perfectly responding to this fantastic ensemble!
There were so many fantastic gowns at the SAG Awards that I can't choose a favorite! I honestly, equally love ALL of these picks!
Julia Garner wore this gorgeous aquamarine gown by Zac Posen. I love the scattered flower design on the fabric to add texture and the Victorian-esque silhouette. It's both elegant for the awards show and chic for this up and coming actress.
Sandra Oh picked up a SAG Award for her work in Killing Eve while wearing the Ophelia gown by Jenny Packham. I love the combination of fabrics, the embellished main dress with the crepe drape that cascades into an attached train. It's very elegant and unique.
This Ellie Saab gown worn by Michelle Yeoh combines two of my favorite designs - a feather skirt and jeweled bodice! This sophisticated gown is only enhanced by Ms. Yeoh's grace.
Susan Kelechi Watson was a ray of sunshine in this fun and flirty Christian Siriano gown. Not everyone can pull off yellow, but Ms. Watson does it beautifully. I love the second photo, showing just how fresh this dress was in a sea of black suits and backdrops.
I love love LOVE this white Dior couture gown worn by Lady Gaga! The fabric color and floaty skirt are angelic while the attached shorts and deep v frayed neckline are edgy - very Gaga!
Laverne Cox dazzled in this stunning crimson Zac Posen gown! I love the silouette with the drapey sleeve. I think I need to incorporate this sleeve in my own creations! The attached necklace is a lovely surprise in the back with the sleeves coming to a knot and creating a train. Beautiful pattern design!!
While some critics compared this Michael Kors gown to female anatomy I think it's fantastic! Emily Blunt is so lovely and graceful she could rock a paper bag to an awards show, but I love the uniqueness of this dress. I've never seen a ruffle like this on an evening gown and I love the unexpected open back.
Shangela wore my favorite Christian Siriano look of all time! All of the rows and rows of ombre ruffles are just gorgeous! I can't imagine the work that went into this gown, but it was definitely worth it!
While pink was a popular color choice at this year's SAG Awards, all the gowns were so unique like this fabulous Oscar de la Renta frock worn by Gemma Chan. The Crazy Rich Asians actress shared on her instagram page that it took 100 hours of handstitching and 30 yards of silk to create this gown AND it went from sketch to red carpet in less than a week! Kudos to the entire team! I love the feather 'look' and it's even more amazing when it's created by something other than actual feathers.
And the feathers just keep coming! I adore this Ralph & Russo gown worn by Danai Gurira. The entire look, along with the jewels and her hairstyle are incredibly sophisticated. Feathers are so often used to adorn skirts so it's refreshing to see the entire bodice covered in feathers with the skirt kept simple in this look. Just beautiful!
Hello, everyone! and Hello 2019!!!
I am back to blogging and I am oh so happy to share my thoughts on the fashion at last weekend's Golden Globes! There were SOOO many fabulous garments to pick from that it's taken me a week to narrow down my favorites! So let's not delay any longer and get to it!
You can't go wrong with a big puffy, tulle skirt at an awards show! They are often a safe choice so they can become a dime a dozen, but that is not the case with this Monique Lhuillier gown worn by Heidi Klum! I love the unexpected sheer-looking bodice and the flowers adorning the skirt! It's a very fresh look for the red carpet!
Judith Light's Christian Siriano gown was part angel, part Greecian goddess! That fabric is gorgeous and drapes beautifully! I love the layered pearls as accessory, too!
Sandra Oh made history at the 2019 Golden Globes as the first Asian host and of course as hostess she had multiple costume changes, but this Versace look is my favorite! While the skirt has a similar silhouette to Judith Light's gown, it stands out thanks to the draping detail across the torso, the asymetrical neckline, and the big bow at the shoulder. I love that her hair is up to show off the top of this gorgeous gown.
I love this 4 piece custom couture ensemble worn by Billy Porter! It's so refreshing to see a new take on a typical men's suit. Randi Rahm and his team took 6 months to complete this look! The embroidery and embellishment detail is delicious and I love the unexpected hot pink lining! Gorgeous work!!!
When I first saw this next look I was admittedly not a fan. However, it's grown on me and frankly I love it! Caitriona Balfe absolutely rocked this unusual Moschino dress! Not everyone could pull off this silhouette, but Caitriona's statuesque physique wears it beautifully.
I love this Alexander McQueen dress worn by Emily Blunt! It's a great ratio of elegant and sexy. I'm not usually a fan of crochet lace as it often looks like a doily on your grandmother's couch, but the thread and lace detailing used were a fantastic choice. And the peak-a-boo look through the lace isn't scandalous with a nude color bodice and grey skirt. The asymetrical hem has a wonderful organized chaos to it, too. Overall a wonderful choice!
Of course Gemma Chan is like a clothes hanger - everything looks good on her! This deep blue Valentino gown was one of my favorites tho. It's basically a sleeveless romper with an oversize skirt including a long train. I love that because a) it was no doubt comfortable and b) it's completely unexpected!
And last, but definitely not least - my absolute favorite look - Danai Gurira in a custom Rodarte gown! This dress design was inspired by Zimbabwe's national flower, the flame lily. The simple silhouette of the dress is the perfect choice to not over power the texture of the fabric. Red can be a difficult color choice for the red carpet, but pairing it with orange makes this dress pop! Her updo was a perfect styling choice to show off the asymmetrical neckline and bow, too! Bravo!!
The 70th annual Emmy Awards were last night and the attendees did not disappoint on the gold (not red) carpet! There were so many stunning gowns and ensembles it was difficult to narrow down my favorites.
She may have been suffering from bronchitis last night, but that didn't stop Allison Janney from looking flawless in this sequined Prabal Gurung gown. The violet color was a nice contrast on the gold carpet. It also stood out amongst the many attendees who wore either black or white. I love the ruching at the waist accenting her gorgeous figure and the two different types of sleeves.
Thandie Newton graced the gold carpet in this pink Brandon Maxwell gown. The silhouette showed off her svelte figure, while the train added to Thandie's natural elegance. Of course, she had the best accessory of all - Emmy himself. Congrats on your first Emmy award, Thandie!
It may be after Labor Day, but that didn't stop many attendees from rocking white gowns on the gold carpet. First is Kristen Bell in this body hugging Solace London gown. I love the straight across neckline paired with sleeves, not a common look for a formal gown. Her slicked back hair and minimal jewelry paired nicely with this dress. I'm glad she opted to go without a necklace which would have distracted from this unique neckline.
Next up in the sea of white gowns is Angela Bassett who looks phenomenal at 60 years old! She rocked this dramatic Azzia and Osta gown while presenting the emmy award for lead actress in a comedy series. I love the structural accent which in no way obstructed the sleekness of this gown.
The last of my favorite white dresses is this Ralph & Russo gown worn by Jessica Biel. I love the drapey overlay skirt and train. I also love the different sizes of the print and their placements on the dress!
I love love LOVE this Zuhair Murad Couture ensemble! The deep plunging beaded jacket is belted to draw in her waist with a feather peplum and drapey, open skirt. Only someone with gorgeous stems like Keri Russell could pull off slits that high. This gown and silhouette is very unexpected and I love it!
This Zac Posen Resort 2019 gown worn by Joey King ties for first of my favorite 2018 Emmy looks! I love the intricate draping in the bodice - front and back! The design comes together in a V in the back flaunting her gorgeous figure. That multi-layered tulle skirt is a fairytale come true and I LOVE that the photographers grabbed a shot of her twirling in it on the gold carpet! Bravo!!!!!
My other favorite look of the night is this all over jewel embellished Christian Siriano gown worn by Angela Sarafyn! I love the unique, but simple neckline paired with long, dreamy skirt! She looked like an angel floating on the gold carpet! Just fantastic!
