My apologies for the delay between blog posts. I've been working 60 hour work weeks recently, but thankfully that's over for now.
The 91st (or as Tina Fey joked the millionth) Academy Awards was held recently. Between the red carpet and the Vanity Fair After Party there were so many fantastic looks I had to split the list into two. So first off my picks for best dressed at the show!
Sarah Paulson wore this bright and beautiful Brandon Maxwell gown at the show. While pink was the color for this year's Oscars, this dress is quite unique. It's quite voluminous and could easily overwhelm the wearer, but the cutouts are perfectly sized and placed to show off Ms. Paulson's figure.
I love this lilac Balmain gown worn by Emilia Clark. The structured bodice paired with the drapey skirt out of this slinky metallic material is perfect for this Game of Thrones star. The color, while similar to the pinks worn on the carpet, was different enough to stand out.
Lady Gaga shined as bright as the $30 million Tiffany & Co necklace she wore with this Alexander McQueen gown by Sarah Burton. I love this look from head to toe. It's incredibly elegant with the voluminous skirt and train, but with modern twists perfect for Lady Gaga, like the drop waist and sculptural hips.
My favorite look goes to this Christian Siriano ensemble worn by Billy Porter. This design is so innovative and when I look at it I wonder why did we have to wait til 2019 to see it? The look was versatile, too. While Billy Porter was hosting red carpet interviews for the ABC Network he had a slimmer skirt and a skinny tie, which he changed out for the ballgown skirt and bowtie when he walked the red carpet. While many have worn their take on the men's suit on the red carpet, none have blurred the lines of gender identity quite like this one and Billy Porter was the perfect person to wear it. He is confident, loves fashion and always has fun at these stuffy award shows. And thank you to Glenn Close for perfectly responding to this fantastic ensemble!
There were so many fantastic gowns at the SAG Awards that I can't choose a favorite! I honestly, equally love ALL of these picks!
Julia Garner wore this gorgeous aquamarine gown by Zac Posen. I love the scattered flower design on the fabric to add texture and the Victorian-esque silhouette. It's both elegant for the awards show and chic for this up and coming actress.
Sandra Oh picked up a SAG Award for her work in Killing Eve while wearing the Ophelia gown by Jenny Packham. I love the combination of fabrics, the embellished main dress with the crepe drape that cascades into an attached train. It's very elegant and unique.
This Ellie Saab gown worn by Michelle Yeoh combines two of my favorite designs - a feather skirt and jeweled bodice! This sophisticated gown is only enhanced by Ms. Yeoh's grace.
Susan Kelechi Watson was a ray of sunshine in this fun and flirty Christian Siriano gown. Not everyone can pull off yellow, but Ms. Watson does it beautifully. I love the second photo, showing just how fresh this dress was in a sea of black suits and backdrops.
I love love LOVE this white Dior couture gown worn by Lady Gaga! The fabric color and floaty skirt are angelic while the attached shorts and deep v frayed neckline are edgy - very Gaga!
Laverne Cox dazzled in this stunning crimson Zac Posen gown! I love the silouette with the drapey sleeve. I think I need to incorporate this sleeve in my own creations! The attached necklace is a lovely surprise in the back with the sleeves coming to a knot and creating a train. Beautiful pattern design!!
While some critics compared this Michael Kors gown to female anatomy I think it's fantastic! Emily Blunt is so lovely and graceful she could rock a paper bag to an awards show, but I love the uniqueness of this dress. I've never seen a ruffle like this on an evening gown and I love the unexpected open back.
Shangela wore my favorite Christian Siriano look of all time! All of the rows and rows of ombre ruffles are just gorgeous! I can't imagine the work that went into this gown, but it was definitely worth it!
While pink was a popular color choice at this year's SAG Awards, all the gowns were so unique like this fabulous Oscar de la Renta frock worn by Gemma Chan. The Crazy Rich Asians actress shared on her instagram page that it took 100 hours of handstitching and 30 yards of silk to create this gown AND it went from sketch to red carpet in less than a week! Kudos to the entire team! I love the feather 'look' and it's even more amazing when it's created by something other than actual feathers.
And the feathers just keep coming! I adore this Ralph & Russo gown worn by Danai Gurira. The entire look, along with the jewels and her hairstyle are incredibly sophisticated. Feathers are so often used to adorn skirts so it's refreshing to see the entire bodice covered in feathers with the skirt kept simple in this look. Just beautiful!
