Sometimes I don't sew and I venture out into other crafting areas.
My husband and I love Nutcrackers. We collect them. Every year it's tradition to add another one to our collection.
This year I decided to mix up our collection a little by painting one. I bought one of the Paint Your Own Nutcracker kits from my local Joann store. Yeah I know it's for kids ages 4+, but whatever.
It just so happens my husband is a big fan of Drum Corp International (DCI) and one of his absolute favorite performances is by the Bluecoats in 2012. They performed "Love Dance," which is from Cirque du Soleil's KA, a show my husband and I both have worked on the Las Vegas strip. I googled the Bluecoats 2012 to find some source images, gathered the correct paint colors, some blue glitter, and got to work!
I had to mix some white paint into the gold the kit supplied to create the flesh tone and thankfully I had some blue glitter I could use for the drum. I bought a silver paint pen to create the straps and trim. The paint pen was a bit unruly so I had to cover the mistakes with the acrylic paints. The kit came with a sticker sheet so I didn't have to paint the eyes. I coated the nutcracker with Polycrylic Protective Finish from Lowes. It's a large can, but the top can be hammered down to keep for future uses. (Thank you to Jen Bush & John Gallagher for their recommendation on Polycrylic!)
Once the second coat of the protective finish was completely dry I glued the white "hair" from the kit on. I found a black feather boa at Michael's Craft Store that I cut down and glued on to mimic the Bluecoats plummage in the hat.
Now back to sewing.
